The Women's National Basketball Association.
The WNBA is the women version of the NBA. Women's professional basketball teams aren't as popular, but still are talked about. The WNBA teams include the Atlanta Dream, Indiana Fever, the New York Liberty, the Seattle Storm, Chicago Sky, the Los Angeles Sparks, the Phoenix Mercury, the Tulsa Shock, the Connecticut Sun, Minnesota Lynx, the San Antonio Silver Stars, and also the Washington Mystics. There is a total of twelve teams overall.
The WNBA was officially approved by the NBA board on April 24, 1996. The WNBA began with only eight teams, and hasn't grown much since then with still only twelve teams overall. While the WNBA isn't the only professional team in the US, it's the only one that is signed with the NBA. The WBNA wasn't getting very popular, that was until Lisa Leslie came into the WNBA. Lisa Leslie signed with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2001. Leslie was considered to be one of the most dominating post players of that time. Lisa Leslie decided to retire after the 2009 season. Her and Teresa Edwards, former coach and player in the WNBA, are considered "the Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan" of the WNBA.
