The History of Basketball.
James Naismith was the original creator of the rules of the game basketball. The first public game of basketball was played on March 11, 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith was a physical education teacher at Youth Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was directed by Luther Halsey Gulick. They together formed the game of basketball. Naismith, later was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, which was later named the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Naismith took a soccer ball, used as the basketball and a peach basket to create what is now called the basketball hoop. The first college basketball game was played on January 18, 1896. The University of Iowa thought it would be a great idea to invite some of the players from the University of Chicago to
play the first game of basketball. The final score of the game was 15-12, Chicago won. Very different form the ninety and one-hundred scoring games of this century! Later in the 1900s, the first broadcasted basketball game was on National TV. Before, basketball wasn't as popular in the sports industry as football and baseball. In 1963, though, basketball became more popular.
The original thirteen rules of basketball were:
1. The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball can be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but not with a fist.
3. The player cannot run with the ball. The player has to throw it from where he catches it.
4. The ball must be held by the hands. Arms an legs may not be used to hold the ball.
5. No shouldering, hitting, pushing, striking, or tripping of any player is allowed. Infringement of these rules could result in disqualification. NO SUBSTITUTION WILL BE ALLOWED.
6. A foul may be called if a player strikes the ball with a fist, and any rule breaking of rules 3, 4, and 5.
7. If any team makes 3 consecutive fouls, it will count as a basket for the opposing team.
8. A goal can be made if a player throws the ball into the hoop, or batted from the ground into the hoop. The ball has to stay in the hoop.
9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it will be thrown in bounds and played by the first person touching it.
10. The referee is the judge of how many fouls any man gets and has the power to disqualify players.
11. The referee also has the power to judge if the ball is in play, or to which side the ball belongs to.
12. Each game is allowed to fifteen minute halves. Halftime is five minutes.
13. The side scoring the most baskets is the winner.
First, there was no limit on how many players could be on the court at one time. Soon, though, Naismith realized that that was not going to work. The number of players was then limited to nine. Then, in 1897, the number was officially changed to five players allowed on the court at one time. For some time, if a player went out of the game, he was not allowed to come back into the game. In 1920, the rules changed so that a player could re-enter the game once. That still wasn't right, so in 1934, they changed the rules again so that a player could come back into the game twice. They decided to change the rules, this time for the last time. Any player could re-enter the game as many times as needed/wanted.

The first games of basketball were played with soccer balls. Later, though, people figured out that they couldn't be dribbled or passed correctly. The first manufactured basketballs were made in 1894 by a bicycle company. In the late 1890s, SPALDING® took over the bicycle company and started to make brown leather basketballs. By 1905, which basketball a team wanted to use, was up to the team. In 1929, basketballs were redesigned to make it easier to dribble. Today, there are many different brands and kinds of basketballs. Basketball has become a very popular sport and is played professionally by men and women.
